About the Browning Auto-5 (A5)
The Auto-5, commonly called the A5, was one of the first successful semi-automatic shotguns and used a distinctive long-recoil action recognizable by its humpbacked receiver profile. It was manufactured in Belgium for much of its history before later production shifted to Japan under Miroku.
Because the A5 was produced across an unusually long span and in more than one country, collectors distinguish examples by country of manufacture, grade, and specific production era.
The A5's recoil-operated action requires attention to the friction rings and recoil spring assembly, and mechanical condition is an important part of assessing any example.

Valuation
What affects Browning Auto-5 (A5) value
We do not publish a price chart. These are the characteristics that determine what a specific example evaluates at.
Factor 1
Country of manufacture
Belgian-made and Japanese Miroku-made A5 shotguns are assessed with attention to which was used, as collectors view them somewhat differently.
Factor 2
Gauge and weight variant
Sweet Sixteen and Light Twelve configurations are viewed distinctly from Standard weight guns.
Factor 3
Mechanical condition of the recoil system
Because the action relies on friction rings and a recoil spring, functional condition of these parts is a practical factor.
Factor 4
Engraving and grade
Higher-grade guns with factory engraving are assessed differently than plain field-grade examples.
Factor 5
Finish and stock condition
Original bluing and sound, uncracked wood are weighed against refinished or repaired examples.
Factor 6
Era of manufacture
Specific decades of production are identified through serial numbers and proof marks.
