About the Colt Anaconda
The Colt Anaconda is a large-frame double-action revolver introduced in 1990, chambered primarily in .44 Magnum with a .45 Colt version offered as well. It was built on a heavy stainless steel frame with a full underlug barrel designed to handle heavy magnum recoil, and it competed directly with large-frame Smith & Wesson magnum revolvers of the era.
Colt marketed the Anaconda toward hunters and magnum revolver enthusiasts, offering it primarily in a satin stainless finish rather than blue, which distinguished it visually from the Python. Production ended in 2003, and Colt reintroduced a modern version of the Anaconda in 2021 with updated internal components.
Because the Anaconda shares design lineage with the Python but is scaled up for magnum cartridges, collectors often view the two models together as part of Colt's late-20th-century large-frame revolver lineup.
Variations
Colt Anaconda variations that matter
Configuration is often the difference between two otherwise identical examples.
Barrel lengths
The Anaconda was offered with 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch barrels, with the 6-inch and 8-inch lengths being the most common.
Chamberings
.44 Magnum was the primary chambering, with a smaller number produced in .45 Colt.
Finish
Standard production used a satin stainless finish; a small number of Real Tree camouflage-finished hunting editions were also produced.
Original run vs. reintroduced Anaconda
Guns produced from 1990 to 2003 use Colt's original action, while the 2021-onward reintroduction uses updated internals similar to the modern Python.
Valuation
What affects Colt Anaconda value
We do not publish a price chart. These are the characteristics that determine what a specific example evaluates at.
Factor 1
Barrel length
The 8-inch barrel version is less commonly encountered than the 6-inch and is often evaluated as a distinct configuration.
Factor 2
Chambering
.45 Colt examples are scarcer than the standard .44 Magnum chambering and are considered separately during evaluation.
Factor 3
Condition of the stainless finish
Because the Anaconda was sold primarily in satin stainless, holster wear, scratches, and any refinishing attempts are assessed against original factory finish.
Factor 4
Mechanical condition
Timing, lockup, and trigger pull on the large-frame action are evaluated as part of an overall condition assessment, particularly on guns used heavily for magnum hunting loads.
Factor 5
Special editions
Camouflage-finished hunting editions and any documented limited runs are treated as distinct configurations from standard production.
Factor 6
Box and accessories
Original Colt packaging, manuals, and any factory paperwork are considered alongside the firearm.
Factor 7
Original versus reintroduced production
Pre-2003 Anacondas and the 2021 reintroduction are evaluated differently due to internal mechanism changes.
