Colt Python Value

The Colt Python is a mid-to-large frame double-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, known for its full underlug barrel, wide target-style trigger, and a bright, deeply polished factory finish that Colt marketed at the top of its revolver line. It was produced in a range of barrel lengths and became closely associated with target shooters, law enforcement trophy sales, and collectors who valued the fit and finish of Colt's hand-fitted double-action lockwork.

About the Colt Python

The Colt Python is a mid-to-large frame double-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, known for its full underlug barrel, wide target-style trigger, and a bright, deeply polished factory finish that Colt marketed at the top of its revolver line. It was produced in a range of barrel lengths and became closely associated with target shooters, law enforcement trophy sales, and collectors who valued the fit and finish of Colt's hand-fitted double-action lockwork.

Original production Pythons were built with a labor-intensive action job performed by skilled Colt fitters, which made the model expensive to manufacture and eventually contributed to its discontinuation in the late 1990s. Colt's 2020 reintroduction uses updated internal components and modern manufacturing methods, so early and late production guns are viewed differently by collectors.

Because the Python was offered in blued, nickel, and stainless finishes across its production run, and because both cosmetic condition and mechanical timing vary widely among used examples, no two Pythons in the field are alike even when barrel length and finish match.

Variations

Colt Python variations that matter

Configuration is often the difference between two otherwise identical examples.

Barrel lengths

Colt offered the Python with 2.5-inch, 3-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch barrels over its production life, with the 4-inch and 6-inch lengths being the most commonly encountered.

Finish options

Royal blue was the standard finish for most of production; nickel plating and, later, satin stainless steel were also offered as factory options.

Elite and Ultimate editions

In the 1990s Colt produced Python Elite models with upgraded internal tolerances and Ultimate Python variants featuring high-polish bright stainless finishes.

First-generation vs. second-generation Python

Pre-1999 Pythons use Colt's original hand-fitted action, while the 2020-onward reintroduced Python uses a redesigned lockwork and coil-spring action not interchangeable with original parts.

Law enforcement and target configurations

Some Pythons were sold with target hammers, target grips, and adjustable rear sights intended for competition shooting rather than duty carry.

Valuation

What affects Colt Python value

We do not publish a price chart. These are the characteristics that determine what a specific example evaluates at.

  1. Factor 1

    Mechanical timing and lockup

Because the Python's action was hand-fitted at the factory, cylinder timing, barrel-to-cylinder gap, and trigger pull quality are central to how a given example is assessed.

  2. Factor 2

    Finish condition

The bright polished blue finish shows wear, holster marks, and re-blue attempts readily, and refinished guns are evaluated differently than original-finish examples.

  3. Factor 3

    Barrel length and factory configuration

Less common barrel lengths such as 2.5-inch and 8-inch, along with documented Elite and Ultimate variants, are considered separately from standard 4-inch and 6-inch guns.

  4. Factor 4

    Production era

Early production Pythons from the 1950s and 1960s are distinguished from later production runs by frame markings, sight design, and grip material.

  5. Factor 5

    Originality of parts

Non-factory grips, replaced hammers or triggers, and aftermarket sights can affect how an example is evaluated relative to an all-original gun.

  6. Factor 6

    Box, papers, and accessories

Original Colt boxes, manuals, and factory test targets that accompany a Python are considered alongside the firearm itself.

  7. Factor 7

    First-generation versus reintroduced Python

Buyers and collectors evaluate pre-1999 Pythons differently from the 2020-era reintroduction because of the internal mechanism differences.
